This 4.5 Hour accessible Travemunde excursion provides a memorable visit to the fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lubeck, the former capital of the Hanseatic League. During your tour in the “City of Spires“ you will embark on a slow-paced stroll through the heart of the city, experiencing the incredible Holsten Gate, the historic old salt warehouse Salzspeicher and the impressive Town Hall. You will also enjoy an interior visit to the glorious St. Mary’s Church and sit down to indulge in a special local treat and coffee or tea at the world-famous Cafe-Niederegger
Start your tour by meeting your tour guide and accessible van at the Travemunde cruise dock. From here, you will head out on a short drive to incredible, old Medieval town of Lubeck. Escorted by your tour guide, you will embark on a leisurely stroll starting at the historic city gate, the Holsten Gate. Built in 1464, the Brick Gothic construction is one of the relics of Lubeck’s medieval city fortifications. Admire the unique pair of round towers sitting on a large archway entrance as well as a beautiful grand entrance. Close by the Gate, you will see the Salzspeicher, old salt warehouses that are now converted into department store. The structures stand as a great reminder of the town’s medieval trading history and its link with
“white gold“ or salt which was necessary to preserve food in the extreme northerly climates. Your tour guide will share the fascinating history with you as you admire the buildings from outside.
Your leisurely stroll continues along the old charming streets to the very center of the Old Town to the Town Hall (Rathaus). This is one of the most magnificent ones in Germany! It was built in the 13th-15th centuries in dark glazed brick and is surrounded by incredible medieval buildings, as well as charming cafes and shops. During your time here, you will visit the world-renowned, Cafe Niederegger. Founded in 1806 by pastry chef Johann Niederegger, this cafe has become a landmark of the Hanseatic town. It is paritcularly famous for its delicious Niederegger Marzipan. Sit down and relax the unique atmosphere while indulging in delicious Marzipan or fruit cake, and coffee and tea. You will also have some time to browse the candy shoppe and purchase some wonderfully crafted local marzipan if you desire.
The final part of your day will be spent on a memorable interior visit to the glorious St. Mary’s Church. Situated on the highest point of the island that forms the Old Town of Lubeck, this church which was built between 1250 and 1350 is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the old Hanseatic City of Lubeck.
